Record Increase in Home Energy Upgrades in Ireland Driven by SEAI Grants in 2023

The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) has released a report highlighting the remarkable progress made in home energy upgrades supported by Government-funded SEAI grant schemes in 2023. The report reveals a substantial increase of 76% in the number of upgrades completed compared to the previous year, surpassing the set target significantly. Let’s delve into the key outcomes and initiatives that have contributed to this positive trend in sustainable energy upgrades across Irish homes.

The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) has recently disclosed a report showcasing the significant advancements in home energy upgrades facilitated through Government-funded SEAI grant schemes in 2023. The report indicates a noteworthy surge of 76% in the number of upgrades accomplished compared to the previous year, exceeding the set target by 30%. Among the upgraded homes, a substantial 17,600 achieved a BER B2 or better rating, while nearly 5,900 energy-poor households received free energy upgrades.

The key outcomes for 2023, encompassing all SEAI-administered schemes, include:

1. Over 47,900 Home Energy Upgrades: Signifying a 76% increase year-on-year.

2. Capital Expenditure of €319.6 Million: Reflecting a 70% rise year-on-year.

3. Over 17,600 BER B2 Upgrades Completed: Marking a remarkable 108% surge year-on-year.

4. Over 67,400 Applications Processed: Demonstrating a 35% increase year-on-year.

5. Almost 5,900 Fully Funded Energy Upgrades for Low-Income Households: Showing a 33% escalation year-on-year.

6. 664 Approved Housing Body Upgrades Supported under the One-Stop-Shop Service.

7. 44 Fuel-Poor Homes Supported under the Community Energy Grants Scheme.

Moreover, Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien TD, disclosed that an additional 2,445 homes underwent retrofitting under the Local Authority Energy Efficiency Programme, bringing the total supported upgrades to almost 50,400 in 2023. The imminent launch of the Government-backed low-cost loan scheme is anticipated to alleviate the affordability barrier identified in SEAI surveys, thereby encouraging more homeowners to undertake energy-efficient retrofits.

The strides made in enhancing the energy efficiency of Irish homes not only contribute to environmental sustainability but also offer tangible benefits to homeowners in terms of reduced energy costs and increased comfort. The concerted efforts by SEAI and the Government underline a commitment to fostering a greener and more energy-efficient housing sector in Ireland.
