The ESB has successfully obtained planning permission for a significant expansion of its national training campus located in Portlaoise. This expansion aims to accommodate the hiring of an additional 1,000 staff members between 2022 and 2025 to support the organisation’s commitment to achieving Net Zero by 2024. The proposed development includes the construction of new facilities and amenities to enhance the training capabilities of the ESB workforce.

ESB, the national electrical utility, has been granted approval to proceed with the expansion of its national training campus in Portlaoise. The organisation cited the need for extra space to accommodate the hiring of 1,000 new staff members over the period from 2022 to 2025, aligning with their goal of achieving Net Zero by 2024. This expansion project involves the construction of nine additional classrooms, a canteen, and an office at the existing national training centre on the Abbeyleix Road at Curriesbog, Portlaoise.

In addition to the new educational facilities, the development plan includes the provision of 53 new car parking spaces, dedicated bicycle spaces, footpaths, lighting poles, underground cabling, and other associated site works. The extension project aims to create a conducive learning environment for staff, apprentices, external electricians, and contractors. By enhancing the training capabilities at the Portlaoise campus, ESB aims to equip its workforce with the necessary skills and certifications required to effectively deliver on the organisation’s future work programs.

ESB’s Commitment to Net Zero:
A spokesperson from ESB Networks highlighted the significance of the expansion project in facilitating the hiring and training of staff members to support the ambitious goal of achieving Net Zero by 2040. The ESB Networks Training Centre in Portlaoise is recognized as a valuable asset within the electrical utilities sector in Europe. The extension of this facility will play a crucial role in preparing personnel to meet the demands of the evolving energy landscape and deliver on the organisation’s strategic objectives.

The planning application submitted by ESB received approval from Laois County Council, subject to 14 conditions. This decision paves the way for the commencement of construction activities and the subsequent expansion of the national training campus in Portlaoise. The approval reflects the council’s recognition of the importance of investing in training infrastructure to support the growth and development of the energy sector in Ireland.

The approval of the expansion project at ESB’s national training campus in Portlaoise signifies a significant step towards enhancing the organisation’s training capabilities and workforce readiness. The investment in new facilities and amenities will not only support the hiring and training of additional staff but also contribute to the overall sustainability goals of the ESB as it strives to achieve Net Zero emissions in the coming years.
