An Bord Pleanála Greenlights Controversial Castlebar Housing Project Despite Local Opposition

An Bord Pleanála Approves Castlebar Housing Development Amidst Local Objections

An Bord Pleanála has recently granted planning permission for a housing development in Castlebar, Ireland, amidst objections from local residents and against the recommendation of its inspector. The approved project includes the construction of townhouses and apartments, despite concerns raised by some regarding various issues such as road safety, parking, and environmental impact.

An Bord Pleanála has given the go-ahead for a housing development in Castlebar despite facing opposition from local residents and a contrary recommendation from its inspector. The approved project involves the construction of four three-bed townhouses and a two-storey building comprising two two-bed apartments on Turlough Road, Castlebar.

The proposed development entails the demolition of the front façade of a former dwelling and a freestanding building. The townhouses will be situated in the north-eastern section of the site, overlooking Turlough Road, while the apartment building will be located in the north-western part, also facing the road. The apartment building will have an elongated form, aligning its long side elevations with the rear gardens of neighboring dwelling houses. A new site access from Turlough Road will be established to serve two car parks.

Although Mayo County Council had initially approved the development, it was subsequently appealed to An Bord Pleanála, leading to objections from residents. Concerns were raised regarding road safety, parking availability, privacy, pollution, noise levels, and the potential loss of mature oak trees.

Despite the inspector’s recommendation to reject the development, An Bord Pleanála decided to grant planning permission. The board justified its decision by stating that the proposal optimally utilises the site in terms of density. It also highlighted that the development aligns with proper planning standards concerning shared open spaces, on-site access arrangements, car parking provisions, and surface water drainage, ultimately enhancing the character of the surrounding area.

The decision to approve the housing development in Castlebar reflects the board’s assessment that the project meets regulatory requirements and contributes positively to the local environment.
