Irish Government Considers Extending Waiver on Development Contributions for New Housing Projects

The Irish government is contemplating an extension to the temporary waiver on development contributions for new residential projects, according to Taoiseach Simon Harris. His remarks came ahead of a Cabinet subcommittee meeting on housing scheduled for this afternoon.

During his address, Mr. Harris emphasised the importance of practical measures to bolster housing supply. “As I chair my first cabinet meeting on housing today, I aim to explore further practical measures to support supply,” he stated. He noted the positive impact of the current waiver on development levies, suggesting that extending this initiative could yield even greater benefits. “If you have an initiative that’s working and making a difference, it makes sense to prioritise its continuation,” he added, referencing discussions with Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien.

Mr. Harris also refrained from commenting on every new budget proposal, maintaining a focus on broader government stability. His comments followed inquiries about recent statements made by Finance Minister Michael McGrath regarding Budget 2025 at the Fianna Fáil Ard Fheis over the weekend. “Every party has its own Ard Fheis and the right to present its perspective,” Mr. Harris remarked. He stressed his role as Taoiseach involves collaborating with other party leaders and Cabinet colleagues to formulate a robust and fair budget for the autumn.

He humorously noted that budget processes seem to commence earlier each year but reiterated that his primary focus remains on maintaining a stable government.
