Ireland Receives €157.5m EU Grant to Boost Sustainable and Smart Transport Infrastructure

Ireland is set to receive a substantial boost to its transport infrastructure with the allocation of €157.5 million in grants from the European Union. This funding is aimed at fostering the development of sustainable, safe, and smart transport systems across the country, aligning with broader EU objectives to enhance connectivity and environmental sustainability.

The grants are part of the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) programme, which supports the development of high-performing, sustainable, and efficiently interconnected trans-European networks in the fields of transport, energy, and digital services. The CEF programme is instrumental in achieving the EU’s climate and energy targets for 2030 and the European Green Deal objectives.

Enhancing Ireland’s Transport Network

The funding will be directed towards various projects that aim to modernise Ireland’s transport infrastructure. These projects are expected to improve the efficiency and safety of transport systems, reduce environmental impact, and support economic growth by enhancing connectivity within Ireland and with the broader European network.

One of the key areas of focus will be the development of smart transport solutions. This includes the integration of advanced technologies such as intelligent traffic management systems, which can optimise traffic flow and reduce congestion. Additionally, there will be investments in digital infrastructure to support the deployment of autonomous vehicles and other innovative transport solutions.

Promoting Sustainability

A significant portion of the funding will be dedicated to promoting sustainable transport options. This includes the expansion of public transport networks, the development of cycling and pedestrian infrastructure, and the electrification of transport systems. By prioritising these areas, Ireland aims to reduce its carbon footprint and contribute to the EU’s climate goals.

The electrification of transport systems is particularly crucial as it aligns with Ireland’s commitment to phasing out the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030. The funding will support the installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the country, making it easier for individuals and businesses to transition to electric vehicles.

Enhancing Safety

Improving the safety of transport systems is another critical objective of the funding. This will involve upgrading existing infrastructure to meet higher safety standards and implementing new technologies to enhance safety for all road users. For example, the deployment of smart traffic lights and pedestrian crossings can significantly reduce the risk of accidents.

Economic and Social Benefits

The investment in transport infrastructure is expected to yield significant economic and social benefits. By improving connectivity, the projects will facilitate trade and tourism, boost local economies, and create jobs. Enhanced transport systems will also improve access to essential services, such as healthcare and education, particularly in rural areas.

Moreover, the development of sustainable transport options will contribute to improved public health by reducing air pollution and promoting active modes of transport, such as walking and cycling.
