Ireland’s Largest Dairy Farm Powers 52,000 Homes with Solar Energy Partnership

Ireland’s Largest Dairy Farm Embraces Solar Power to Energise 52,000 Homes

Greenhills Farm, renowned as Ireland’s largest dairy farm, has embarked on a pioneering venture by partnering with Orsted, a leader in renewable energy. This collaboration will see the transformation of part of the farm’s land into a solar energy hub, marking a significant step towards sustainable energy production in the region.

Situated in east Cork, Greenhills Farm is managed by the Browne family, who have developed it into a premier dairy operation with over 1,000 cows. The farm has been at the forefront of agricultural innovation, utilising advanced technologies such as a 60-unit rotary parlour and an efficient milking system. Now, the Brownes are taking a bold step into renewable energy by leasing land to Orsted for the development of a 250MW solar project. This initiative is set to generate enough power to supply over 52,000 homes annually.

The decision to partner with Orsted reflects Greenhills Farm’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Tom Browne, one of the farm’s managers, expressed pride in their leadership within the dairy sector and excitement about contributing to renewable energy generation. This partnership is seen as a natural progression for the farm, aligning with its ongoing efforts to innovate and embrace sustainable practices.

Orsted’s vice-president of onshore business in Ireland and the UK, TJ Hunter, highlighted the significance of the land lease agreement as a crucial step in the development of renewable energy projects. He noted the excellent solar conditions in east Cork, which make Greenhills an ideal location for solar energy generation. The project is part of Orsted’s broader strategy to support Ireland in achieving its ambitious goal of 8GW of solar energy by 2030.

The collaboration between Greenhills Farm and Orsted represents a forward-thinking approach to energy production, combining traditional agriculture with cutting-edge renewable technology. As the farm continues to grow and innovate, the Browne family views this partnership as an extension of their dedication to the environment and future generations.
