Kildare Club’s Expansion Plans: Seeking Key Planning Permission

Kildare GAA Club Seeks Planning Permission for New Gym Construction

Facing limited training space, a Kildare GAA club submits planning permission to expand its facilities and support player development.

Round Towers GAA Club, located in Kildare town, has formally applied to Kildare County Council for planning permission to build a new gym at Saint Brigid’s Park. This development aims to address growing demand by constructing a single-storey extension to the south-west rear of the existing clubhouse to house the gym. The application also includes all necessary ancillary and associated works related to the project.

Founded in 1887, Round Towers is a well-established club boasting over 200 members and representing 15 teams across age groups from under-6s to senior men. The proposed gym is designed to enhance training facilities and infrastructure, thereby elevating the club’s capacity to support and develop its players.

The application was submitted on November 24, 2025, with a submission deadline set for January 6, 2026, and a closing date for public observations on January 27, 2026. This timeline marks a critical phase in obtaining formal approvals required to advance the substantial upgrade of the club’s sporting amenities.

This planning permission request reflects the wider trend in County Kildare, where multiple sports clubs are seeking significant upgrades including new training facilities, all-weather pitches, and lighting improvements. These projects often involve considerations such as environmental impact assessments and flood-risk development evaluations as part of the planning process monitored by the local authority and An Bord Pleanála on appeal.

By expanding its gym facilities, Round Towers GAA Club is not only investing in enhanced sports infrastructure but also reinforcing community engagement and local economic activity. Improved amenities can attract new talent and provide existing members with a more comprehensive and comfortable environment to train, promoting long-term club sustainability.

While the application progresses, the local community and stakeholders will watch closely, hopeful that the proposal receives a favorable An Bord Pleanála decision without any issues concerning material contravention of planning regulations or environmental concerns. Successfully navigating these planning requirements is essential to ensure smooth development and timely completion of the new gym.

Expansion of sports facilities like this also aligns with broader county-level housing scheme approvals and infrastructure planning by Kildare County Council. Coordinated development ensures that sports facilities complement residential growth while respecting environmental safeguards.
