A deliberate fire has destroyed the interior of the 150-year-old former Convent of Mercy in Downpatrick, County Down.

A deliberate fire has destroyed the interior of the 150-year-old former Convent of Mercy in Downpatrick, County Down.

The blaze broke out at approximately 7:00 PM BST on Sunday, 28 June 2026, on Street Street, near the burial site of Saint Patrick. The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) deployed 70 firefighters and 10 fire appliances to the scene, including aerial ladder units, a Command Support Unit, and a water tanker.

Fire crews utilized breathing apparatus, jets, and aerial equipment to manage the well-developed fire. While the fire almost completely gutted the interior of the historic convent building, emergency services successfully saved the adjacent parish church.

No injuries were reported during the incident, and firefighting operations concluded by 7:00 AM on Monday, 29 June 2026. Authorities have determined the cause of the fire to be deliberate ignition, and police have secured the area while inquiries into the arson continue. Members of the public have been advised by police and the NIFRS to avoid the vicinity.
