Energy supplier announces 82% hike to night-rate electricity prices
Friday 3 July 2026
An Irish energy supplier has introduced an 82 per cent increase to its night-rate electricity tariff, impacting households relying on night charging for solar batteries and electric vehicles.
An energy supplier in Ireland has introduced an 82 per cent increase to its night-rate electricity tariff, targeting the low-cost charging rates frequently used by electric vehicle (EV) owners and solar panel users.
This specific price hike is not part of a broader general price change but focuses solely on the night rate, representing one of the largest single increases of its kind recorded recently in the Irish energy market. The immediate rate hike is expected to affect households with solar energy systems and EVs that depend on cheaper overnight electricity. From 1 August 2026, the standard night rate for purchasing electricity is set at 9.99c per kWh.
The development coincides with wider upward movements in utility prices across the Irish energy sector. Electric Ireland and Yuno Energy have already implemented broader tariff adjustments, which have raised average annual residential gas and electricity bills by between €250 and €300. Specifically, Electric Ireland increased its residential electricity charges by 8 per cent and its gas prices by 7.7 per cent, with those changes taking effect from 1 July 2026.
Additionally, grid regulatory fees have contributed to upward pressure on bills. From 1 October 2025, distribution charges rose by 19 per cent and transmission charges increased by 6.5 per cent, which collectively added approximately 4 per cent to standard electricity rates.
