ESB Networks application glitch raises concerns over solar export payments
Tuesday 7 July 2026
More than 200,000 Irish households with solar panels are reportedly facing concerns over missing export payments during sunny weeks due to an ESB application glitch.
An application glitch at ESB has raised concerns that more than 200,000 households with solar panels could miss out on export payments during some of the sunniest weeks of the year.
The issue, reported by the Irish Independent, affects microgenerators who export surplus electricity back to the national grid. Under Irish microgeneration schemes, homeowners who install solar photovoltaic (PV) panels are eligible to receive payments—often referred to as clean export tariffs—for the excess renewable electricity they feed back into the system.
However, a technical glitch within the ESB application has caused widespread concern among domestic solar generators. Homeowners fear that the system failure during peak summer generation weeks will lead to inaccurate tracking or missing financial credits for the renewable energy they have supplied back to the network.
At present, ESB has not publicly detailed the exact nature of the application error or provided a definitive timeline for when the tracking and payment systems will be fully synchronised to ensure all generated exports are accounted for.
