Former Tipperary Mine Transformed into Ireland's First National Biorefinery Pilot Plant

Tuesday 30 June 2026

Ireland's first National Biorefinery Pilot Plant has opened at the former Lisheen zinc mine in County Tipperary, following an investment of approximately €10 million.

A former zinc mine in Lisheen, County Tipperary, has been converted into Ireland's first National Biorefinery Pilot Plant.

Supported by approximately €10 million in combined state and European Union funding, the new open-access facility provides a testing ground for start-ups, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and researchers. Users will be able to test and develop bioeconomy concepts before investing in full-scale commercial production.

The plant is designed to convert agricultural waste, industrial waste, and natural materials into renewable energy, chemicals, and new sustainable materials.

This redevelopment of the former mining site aligns with Ireland’s national bioeconomy strategy and the objectives of the government’s Just Transition Fund, repurposing legacy industrial infrastructure for green energy development. The operational facility is expected to create at least 30 on-site jobs while supporting broader efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
