The National Transport Authority will publish its detailed national development plan implementation plan later this year, setting out the timeline for Limerick BusConnects within available funding.
The National Transport Authority (NTA) is set to publish its detailed national development plan (NDP) implementation plan later this year, which will outline the timeline and elements of the BusConnects Limerick programme to be progressed up to 2030.
Speaking in the Seanad, Minister of State Marian Harkin confirmed that the forthcoming implementation plan will determine the next phases of the BusConnects programme across Irish cities within available funding limits. This update follows the publication of the Department of Transport's NDP sectoral investment plan last November and the NDP review last July.
The update was issued in response to queries from Senator Dee Ryan regarding delays and conflicting delivery timelines for the Limerick public transport scheme. Senator Ryan noted that the project, originally anticipated for delivery in 2025, has faced local concerns that its completion could be delayed further.
According to the Minister of State, the redesigned Limerick bus network published in December 2023 was developed by the NTA in collaboration with Limerick City and County Council, Clare County Council, and Bus Éireann. The strategy aims to ensure that 41% of Limerick residents live within 400 metres of a high-frequency bus route operating at least every 15 minutes.
