Activists demand publication of delayed 2026 Climate Action Plan
Wednesday 16 September 2026
Climate coalition Stop Climate Chaos has urged Minister Darragh O’Brien to publish the delayed 2026 Climate Action Plan, which has still not been released as the year draws to a close.
Climate activists have called on the government to immediately publish the delayed 2026 Climate Action Plan as the calendar year nears its end.
The coalition group Stop Climate Chaos is urging Minister for Climate Darragh O’Brien to release the document, which outlines national climate measures. Traditionally, Ireland’s annual climate plans are published either before or at the very beginning of the relevant calendar year. However, the government has yet to produce the 2026 strategy.
Seán McLoughlin, policy and advocacy officer for Christian Aid Ireland, criticised the delay, stating that failing to publish the plan leaves the government without clear direction on climate action. McLoughlin added that missing climate targets impacts lives and livelihoods both in Ireland and abroad.
In May of this year, Minister O’Brien indicated that he would present the 2026 Climate Action Plan to the Cabinet within weeks. He noted at the time that the forthcoming document would be a shorter, more accessible version compared to previous iterations, following criticisms from Labour leader Ivana Bacik.
