An Coimisiún Pleanála approved zero wind farms in first quarter of 2026

Wednesday 8 July 2026

Newly released figures from An Coimisiún Pleanála reveal that no wind farm projects were approved in the first quarter of 2026, compared to seven in Q1 2025.

An Coimisiún Pleanála approved no new wind farm projects during the first quarter of 2026, according to updated renewable energy statistics published on 6 July 2026.

This representing a significant drop from the first quarter of 2025, when the planning authority approved seven wind projects with a combined capacity of 402 MW.

The statistics highlight ongoing delays within the national planning system, showing that nine wind projects representing 592 MW have been awaiting a decision for more than a year. Furthermore, an additional six projects totalling 406 MW have remained stuck in the planning system for over two years.

In contrast to the wind sector, solar development saw some activity. The planning authority granted permission for six solar farms during the period from January to March 2026.

An Coimisiún Pleanála, formerly operating as An Bord Pleanála, has made the complete dataset, which includes monthly breakdowns of decisions and applications, available on its statistics website.
