Bridges proposed as safer alternative to Irish rail level crossings

Sunday 6 September 2026

Replacing human-operated level crossings with bridges could significantly reduce safety risks and improve network efficiency, Rail Users Ireland has suggested.

Building bridges to replace human-operated level crossings could resolve major risk factors and improve the rail network, according to Rail Users Ireland.

Speaking on *The Pat Kenny Show*, Rail Users Ireland spokesperson Mark Gleeson suggested that constructing bridges over rail lines could resolve safety hazards associated with manual crossings. This discussion follows two recent level crossing incidents, one of which resulted in the death of a 12-year-old boy.

While automated level crossings operate in Dublin and other locations across Ireland, Gleeson highlighted that high costs and site-specific constraints mean automation is not always a viable option.

To manage safety at other junctions, Irish Rail has rolled out warning systems at nearly 70 locations. However, transitioning from manual crossings to bridge infrastructure is put forward as a potential alternative to secure the rail network and improve transport flow.
