Budget 2027 sets €20.3bn capital spending ceiling ahead of October announcement

Saturday 5 September 2026

The financial framework for the upcoming budget allocates €20.3 billion for capital spending within an overall expenditure limit of €125.5 billion.

Budget 2027 will include a capital expenditure ceiling of €20.3 billion when presented to Dáil Éireann on Tuesday 6 October.

Finance Minister Simon Harris and Public Expenditure Minister Jack Chambers are scheduled to present the budget, which establishes an overall government expenditure limit of €125.5 billion. Within this total, current spending will account for €105.2 billion.

The overall budget package is valued at €8.5 billion. This includes a €1.5 billion tax package alongside €7 billion in additional public spending, representing a 5.9 per cent increase in public expenditure over the previous year.

While the government intends to focus on improving public services and "making work pay", several policy decisions are still under discussion. These include ongoing deliberations regarding the future of the carbon tax, potential reductions in childcare fees, and proposed cuts to alcohol excise duties.
