Construction begins on 183 social and affordable homes in Mungret

Saturday 4 July 2026

The Land Development Agency and Limerick City and County Council have commenced construction on 183 affordable and social homes at Mungret, Co. Limerick.

The Land Development Agency (LDA) and Limerick City and County Council (LCCC) have commenced construction on 183 social and affordable homes in Mungret, County Limerick.

Galway-based contractor Coolsivna Construction was appointed to deliver the project following a tender process. The construction programme for these initial homes is scheduled to run for 30 months.

Phase Details

The first phase of the development will deliver 99 homes, comprising:

  • 14 two-bedroom units
  • 60 three-bedroom units
  • 25 four-bedroom units

These homes will be configured as a combination of detached and semi-detached houses alongside duplexes.

Site Context and Partnerships

The development is situated on a greenfield site within the grounds of the former Mungret College. LCCC previously secured planning permission for more than 250 homes on the lands. While the LDA and LCCC partnership is delivering 183 of these units, the remaining homes, a crèche, community spaces, and a public plaza will be constructed by Clúid Housing. Clúid, an Approved Housing Body (AHB), will deliver its portion as an integrated scheme designed for older people.

This residential scheme is part of the broader Mungret Framework, a strategic initiative designed to unlock public and private land for housing, employment, and community infrastructure. The wider framework has the potential to yield approximately 1,950 homes. Infrastructure already delivered under the framework includes a new park, playground, local schools, a link road, and several private residential developments.
