Dublin Airport carbon budget could be exhausted 16 years early, report warns

Tuesday 15 September 2026

A new European airport expansion report warns that Dublin Airport is on course to deplete its carbon budget by 2034 as passenger limits are reviewed.

Dublin Airport is on course to exhaust its entire carbon budget by 2034 as the Government moves to lift passenger growth restrictions.

A newly published European report on airport expansion has warned that the Irish aviation hub's carbon budget could be depleted sixteen years ahead of schedule. According to the study, the airport is projected to consume its designated 'fair share' carbon allocation within the next decade.

This assessment comes amid ongoing policy developments, as the Government actively moves to dismantle current restrictions on passenger expansion at the site. The findings highlight the growing policy challenges in balancing national climate commitments against transport infrastructure capacity.
