Galway City Council Bills HSE €245,000 Over Derelict Art Deco Hospital Building

Sunday 4 October 2026

Galway City Council has billed the HSE €245,000 after placing an art deco hospital building on the derelict property register, warning of interest charges on unpaid levies.

Galway City Council has billed the HSE €245,000 after an art deco hospital building was placed on the derelict property register.

The local authority issued a warning last January stating that the levy would incur interest charges if the outstanding sum was not paid within two months.

The billing follows the formal addition of the hospital property to the council's derelict property register. Under statutory dereliction procedures, municipal authorities can impose financial levies on neglected or vacant properties on the register.

The demand highlights ongoing local government enforcement against state-owned sites, applying statutory derelict property charges to public sector health infrastructure.
