Google and Energy Dome advance 23MW Offaly energy storage project

Tuesday 30 June 2026

A new 23MW/200MWh long-duration energy storage facility utilising CO2 battery technology has secured planning consent at the former Rhode power station.

Google and Energy Dome have finalised a commercial agreement for a 23MW energy storage facility in County Offaly after securing planning consent.

The project, which will have a storage capacity of 200MWh, is set to be located at the site of the former Rhode thermal power station, a former peat-fired plant. Energy Dome will own, develop, and operate the site using its proprietary carbon dioxide (CO2) battery technology to store excess renewable energy and dispatch it during grid stress.

Google has signed on as the 100% offtaker for the energy stored at the facility. Alongside planning consent, the development has secured a grid connection and a 10-year capacity contract from EirGrid. Commercial operations at the Rhode site are scheduled to begin in 2028, aiming to support grid stability and assist Ireland's transition to carbon-free energy.
