Government Approves National Maternity Hospital for 2027 Construction Start

Wednesday 21 October 2026

The Government has approved the new National Maternity Hospital at Elm Park in Dublin, with construction scheduled to begin in early 2027 and finish in 2033.

The Government has granted approval for the new National Maternity Hospital project, with construction scheduled to commence in early 2027.

Under the updated delivery schedule, the healthcare facility is not projected to finish until 2033. John Sisk & Son is set to serve as the main contractor for the scheme, which was originally announced in 2013.

The development will be situated at the St Vincent’s University Hospital campus at Elm Park, Dublin. In 2025, the project was scheduled for completion in 2029, following reported expenditure of €47 million on external consultants by the Department of Health.

Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill stated that the hospital will deliver maternity, neonatal, and gynaecological services in a purpose-built facility. The development has also received formal backing from Health Service Executive chief executive Anne O’Connor and NMH Master Professor Jennifer Walsh as procurement advances toward the 2027 site start.
