Government approves new National Maternity Hospital to proceed to contract award

Friday 23 October 2026

The Government has granted approval for the new National Maternity Hospital at St Vincent's University Hospital, clearing the HSE to advance through Approval Gate 3 of the Infrastructure Guidelines.

The Government has approved the new National Maternity Hospital project, allowing the HSE to advance through Approval Gate 3 of the Infrastructure Guidelines.

The Cabinet decision clears the Health Service Executive (HSE) to award construction contracts in the coming weeks for the new facility, which will be constructed at St Vincent's University Hospital.

According to the Minister for Health, the project will co-locate maternity, neonatal, and gynaecological services alongside the specialist and acute services at St Vincent's. The co-location is designed to ensure women and newborn infants with complex clinical requirements have immediate access to specialist hospital care.

The progression marks the transition of the major healthcare infrastructure development from planning and evaluation into the formal contract award and construction phase under the State's Infrastructure Guidelines.
