Government Considers Repeating EV Scrappage Scheme Next Year
Monday 14 September 2026
A second electric vehicle scrappage scheme offering €5,000 grants could be launched next year following a highly popular pilot scheme, according to Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien.
Another €5,000 electric vehicle scrappage scheme could be introduced next year following a highly successful pilot, according to Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien.
The pilot scheme offered a €5,000 scrappage grant to drivers trading in vehicles older than 13 years for a new electric vehicle. The grant was restricted to fully electric vehicles and did not apply to second-hand purchases. Drivers were able to combine this funding with the existing €3,500 electric vehicle purchase grant.
According to Minister O’Brien, the pilot was "incredibly successful," prompting considerations for a repeat rollout next year. When the scheme initially opened in July, it hit its application limit within 75 minutes of launching. Minister O’Brien confirmed that the initiative successfully removed 2,000 older, more polluting cars from the road in under 90 minutes.
His department is scheduled to publish official data on the pilot in the coming weeks. Early indications point to strong participation rates in rural areas.
