Government Land Push Prompts 1,600-Home Rezoning Focus in Greystones

Friday 2 October 2026

A proposal for roughly 1,600 homes in Greystones has emerged under government initiatives directing councils to zone more residential land.

Approximately 1,600 homes have been proposed for Greystones under national efforts directing local authorities to deliver additional land for residential development.

The push to release land for housing has centred on local golf course grounds in the Charlesland area of Greystones, County Wicklow, making the site a focal point in wider zoning debates.

Greystones, located within the Dublin commuter belt, has experienced acute property affordability pressures. Data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) indicates a local median home price of €580,000, establishing the settlement among the highest-priced residential markets outside Dublin.

The residential proposals follow broader central government measures requiring local councils to identify and zone sufficient development land to address national housing targets.
