Government to exempt free childcare scheme providers from commercial rates

Thursday 10 September 2026

Childcare providers offering the State's free childcare programme are set to be exempted from commercial rates bills under new Government plans.

The Government is moving to exempt childcare providers offering the State's free childcare programme from commercial rates.

Under the proposed changes, operators who deliver the state-funded childcare initiative will no longer be liable for commercial rates bills. The measure is designed to address the financial impact of these local authority charges on service providers.

Currently, commercial rates represent a significant operational cost for early years facilities. By introducing this exemption, the Government intends to support the viability of services participating in the free childcare scheme. Further details on the legislative implementation and timeline for the rates relief have yet to be formally established.
