A state-backed personal investment scheme expected next year will exclude cryptocurrencies but place no ethical limits on other funds, aiming to steer savers away from property-based retirement planning.
The government plans to launch a state-backed personal investment scheme next year designed to shift people away from using housing for retirement.
According to the Department of Finance, the flagship savings scheme will feature very few investment restrictions. Eligible options will include listed shares, bonds, and various investment funds, allowing participants to diversify portfolios across different asset classes, issuers, manufacturers, and geographies.
While riskier cryptocurrency assets are excluded, the department does not plan to restrict investment choices by industry, geography, or strategy. This means funds linked to fossil fuels or weapons companies will remain eligible. The initiative aims to provide alternative investment options for individuals who might otherwise rely on property acquisition to secure their retirement.
