Grid and Battery Storage Issues Lead to Lost Wind and Solar Electricity

Wednesday 21 October 2026

Electricity system limitations and battery storage deficits resulted in the loss of enough renewable power to supply almost half a million Irish homes over nine months.

Grid limitations caused the loss of enough wind and solar electricity to power almost half a million Irish homes over nine months.

According to reporting by RTÉ News, significant volumes of renewable power generated during the first nine months of the year could not be utilised due to restrictions on the electricity system alongside battery storage issues.

The figures underline operational bottlenecks across Ireland's electricity network, where renewable output from wind farms and solar installations outpaces local network capability and available energy storage assets. In the absence of expanded battery capacity to absorb generation peaks, surplus green electricity continues to be lost rather than supplied to the grid.
