Invasive Alien Species Bureau remains unstaffed following department announcement

Sunday 25 October 2026

The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage has yet to recruit staff or set a hiring plan for its planned Invasive Alien Species Bureau, following parliamentary questions on the unit's rollout.

The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage has not yet appointed staff or opened recruitment for its planned Invasive Alien Species Bureau.

The Department, which holds responsibility for biodiversity and national parks, announced the formation of the bureau in May. However, parliamentary question responses obtained by the office of Social Democrats TD Jennifer Whitmore confirmed in July that the entity had no assigned personnel and no hiring plan in place.

Plants account for nearly half of the invasive species of concern across Ireland, establishing across both public and private land holdings. The rollout delay coincides with wider practical difficulties for land managers and communities, including unclear licensing rules and persistent confusion surrounding authorised waste facilities for disposing of invasive material.
