Irish Yeast Company developer drops takeaway plans to restore historic shop

Wednesday 9 September 2026

Capital Estate Management Limited has revised its planning application for 6 College Street, removing a proposed takeaway use to focus on restoring the historic shop and overhead housing.

The developer of Dublin's historic Irish Yeast Company building has dropped takeaway plans to focus on restoring the shop and overhead housing.

Capital Estate Management Limited has submitted revised proposals to Dublin City Council for the protected structure at 6 College Street, along with neighbouring properties on College Street and Fleet Street.

The developer originally applied in January for internal alterations to the premises, including lowering the basement floor and installing new staircases. While the application stated that the historic retail use at ground and basement levels and residential use on the upper floors would be retained without a change of use, Dublin City Council planners identified a proposed takeaway use at the ground floor in February.

Following requests for further information and concerns raised by council planners regarding the impact of a takeaway on the protected structure, the developer has removed the takeaway element from the plans. The updated proposals instead focus on restoring the ground and basement retail spaces alongside the overhead residential unit.

The Irish Yeast Company operated opposite Trinity College and was one of the oldest surviving businesses in Dublin before its closure in the mid-2010s.
