Local authorities reportedly urged to halt purchases of turnkey homes

Monday 26 October 2026

Councils have reportedly been encouraged to stop acquiring turnkey housing units from developers amid concerns over competition with private buyers.

Local authorities have reportedly been encouraged to cease purchasing turnkey properties from private developers, according to media reports reviewed on Newstalk.

Coverage in the *Irish Mail on Sunday* indicated that councils face guidance to halt turnkey acquisitions, pointing to possible adjustments in government housing priority. Discussing the reports on *The Pat Kenny Show*, Kevin Doyle, executive editor of the *Irish Independent*, highlighted that state purchases of newly finished houses place local authorities in direct competition with prospective homeowners.

Doyle noted that when councils acquire newly constructed three-bedroom properties directly from developers, competing bids against young couples and families exert upward pressure on house prices.
