Luas Finglas extension achieves Ireland's first BREEAM 'Excellent' infrastructure rating

Thursday 3 September 2026

The proposed Luas Finglas Green Line extension has become the first infrastructure project in Ireland to receive an 'Excellent' rating under BREEAM sustainability standards.

The Luas Finglas light rail extension has become the first infrastructure project in Ireland to achieve a BREEAM infrastructure 'Excellent' rating.

Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) is developing the Green Line extension, with consulting firm Egis appointed to lead the preliminary design and statutory planning process. As part of this preparatory work, Egis is tasked with producing a reference design to support a future Railway Order Application to An Coimisiún Pleanála.

To support the design and understand the environmental and social impacts of the route, Egis carried out a Public Life Tool Assessment of the open spaces along the proposed alignment. This assessment utilized data collection and mapping methodologies established by Jan Gehl and the Gehl Institute to evaluate the social and physical characteristics of the local public spaces.

Following these design-stage assessments, the sustainability certification body BREEAM has also named the Luas Finglas project as a finalist in the People & Communities category of its upcoming awards.
