The proposed redevelopment of Scoil Mhuire in Moycullen, County Galway, is completing architectural design stages and is expected to proceed to tender in the coming weeks.
The proposed redevelopment of Scoil Mhuire in Moycullen, County Galway, is expected to progress to tender in the coming weeks, Minister Hildegarde Naughton has confirmed.
Speaking during a Dáil debate, Minister Naughton stated that the project, which involves the demolition of the school's existing single-storey building and the construction of a new 16-classroom school, is completing Stage 2B of the architectural design process. This stage encompasses detailed design work, securing statutory approvals, and preparing tender documentation.
Planning permission for the redevelopment was secured by the diocese and the school's board of management in May 2023. The board of management has also acquired additional land to facilitate the new build on the enlarged Moycullen site.
The project is being delivered under the Department of Education's ADAPT programme, which uses an external project manager to oversee stages from architectural planning through to construction.
Scoil Mhuire is one of 105 schools prioritised for tender or construction during 2026 and 2027 under a €1.6 billion investment tranche. Deputy Seán Kyne welcomed the progression, noting that the school currently accommodates 383 pupils and requires upgraded facilities to replace existing prefabs.
Minister Naughton also noted that since 2020, the Department has allocated more than €283 million in capital funding to Galway schools, upgrading 98 schools and sanctioning 111 special classes in the county.
