OPW launches €300k tender for national consultation on GPO redevelopment

Thursday 3 September 2026

The Office for Public Works is seeking experts to run a public consultation campaign on the future of Dublin's historic General Post Office complex.

The Office for Public Works (OPW) has launched a tender to oversee a national consultation regarding the future redevelopment of Dublin's General Post Office complex.

The state agency is seeking experts to facilitate a "national conversation" regarding the historical and future significance of the landmark O'Connell Street site. The procurement documents estimate the contract value at €240,000, which rises to nearly €300,000 once 23% VAT is included.

The chosen contractor will design and manage a non-statutory consultation programme. This work will involve creating a trackable communications strategy and delivering an engaging campaign of events both inside the GPO and at other locations to gather feedback from key stakeholders and the public.

Spanning 25,000 square metres—equivalent to the area of two GAA pitches—the GPO complex currently houses the GPO Museum and an active public post office. The site originally opened in 1818 as the headquarters for An Post, later serving as the headquarters for rebel leaders during the 1916 Easter Rising.

The initiative follows previous comments from Taoiseach Micheál Martin, who stated that the redevelopment of the GPO is of crucial importance to the nation.
