PBP Proposes €500 Electricity Credit Funded by Data Centre Levy

Friday 18 September 2026

PBP has called on the Government to introduce a €500 electricity credit for Irish households, funded by a new levy on data centre power consumption.

PBP has called for a €500 household electricity credit funded by a new electricity consumption levy on data centres.

During a debate in the Dáil, proposals were put forward for the Government to establish the €500 utility credit for every household in Ireland. Under the proposed funding model, the cost of the household energy support would be covered by introducing a targeted levy on the electricity consumed by data centres.

The policy proposal comes amid ongoing national discussions regarding the infrastructure demands and energy grid capacity requirements of large-scale data centres in Ireland. The suggestion seeks to directly link the growth of energy-intensive commercial infrastructure with domestic utility relief.

No formal implementation plans or legislative changes have been confirmed by the Government in relation to the proposed levy.
