Saturday 12 September 2026

Planning permission has been granted for a new railway station at Blackpool in Cork City, marking the first of eight planned under the Cork Area Commuter Rail Programme.

Planning permission has been granted for a new train station at Blackpool in Cork City.

The new station is the first of eight developments planned under the Cork Area Commuter Rail Programme. The facility will be built near the site of the historic Blackpool Station, bounded by Dublin Hill Road and Redforge Road.

According to Irish Rail, construction is expected to begin in 2027 and will take up to two years to complete. Once operational, Blackpool will be served by existing commuter services on the Mallow to Cork route. Irish Rail has indicated that up to 10 trains will run daily, with plans to increase service frequency after the other programme stations are completed.

The station design features two platforms connected by a pedestrian footbridge, with access from both sides of the railway line provided via stairs and accessible lifts. The development will also include the infrastructure required to support future rail electrification.

Planned station facilities include accessible parking spaces, electric vehicle (EV) charging points, motorcycle parking, bicycle stands, and bicycle lockers. Dedicated set-down areas will also be provided for buses, taxis, and cars.

Irish Rail Chief Executive Mary Considine stated that the project will provide a more sustainable transport option.
