The Planning Appeals Commission has granted temporary permission for a converted double-decker bus to be used as short-term tourist accommodation in Portrush, overturning a previous council refusal.
The Planning Appeals Commission has granted temporary planning permission for a converted double-decker bus to provide short-term visitor accommodation in Portrush.
The application, submitted by Emma Mullan of Garvagh, sought permission for a change of use of land south of 10 Castle Erin Road. The development details include a new access route, two parking spaces, and ancillary works to support the tourist-themed accommodation.
Under the approved plans, the double-decker bus will undergo refurbishment to prepare it for visitors. The lower deck is designed to contain a lounge, kitchen, and storage area, while the upper deck will accommodate three bedrooms and a shower room.
The Causeway Coast and Glens Planning Committee had initially refused the planning application. However, the Planning Appeals Commission overturned the local authority's decision following a remote informal hearing. The presiding commissioner noted that the project will deliver unique visitor accommodation that aligns with Portrush's wider tourism sector and complies with Local Development Plan objectives to support tourism investment.
