Regulatory Requirements Face Potential Irish Launch of Lidl Solar Battery

Wednesday 8 July 2026

Lidl's new €299 balcony solar battery, launched in Germany, faces regulatory hurdles and extra costs if introduced to the Irish market.

German discount retailer Lidl has launched a 2.24 kWh balcony solar battery under its Tronic brand in Germany, though the product is not yet available in Ireland.

The lithium iron phosphate battery is priced at €299 in Germany, with an app-controlled smart version available for an additional €100 to enable monitoring through the Lidl Home app. The unit has a 1,000 W charging input and an 800 W output. It measures 310 mm × 170 mm × 350 mm, weighs approximately 19.8 kg, and is compatible with 99% of microinverters and balcony photovoltaic systems. Solar panels and inverters are not included in the offer.

While the product is marketed for European customers, any future launch in Ireland would require compliance with domestic grid regulations. Irish consumers connecting such systems to the electrical grid must have an electrician sign an NC6 form. This certification process typically adds €180 to €350 to the total setup cost, which may impact the overall affordability of the system. Alternatively, the battery can legally operate off-grid to power standalone appliances without being connected to the property's primary house wiring.
