Revenue to Secure Powers for 7% Vacant Property Tax Due in 2028

Monday 19 October 2026

Revenue is set to receive powers to collect a new 7 per cent tax from owners of vacant properties, with the charge expected to take effect in 2028.

Revenue will receive powers to collect a new 7 per cent tax on vacant properties, under policy plans reported by the *Irish Independent*.

The enforcement measures will grant the Revenue Commissioners collection authority for the planned 7 per cent levy on vacant holdings.

Implementation of the charge is not anticipated until 2028. The multi-year lead-in timeframe is intended to provide property owners with an opportunity to undertake remedial works and address vacancy before liability commences.

Specific legislative parameters and qualification thresholds governing which vacant properties fall within scope of the charge have not yet been detailed.
