Irish households are weighing solar panels as electricity costs rise, with SEAI grants of €1,800 helping reduce the typical post-grant installation cost to €6,000.
Irish households are increasingly adopting solar panels to combat rising electricity costs, supported by state grants of €1,800.
According to details published by the Irish Examiner, the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) offers a grant that reduces the upfront installation costs of residential solar systems. Paul Deane, a senior lecturer at UCC, estimated that a typical full solar-panel system costs approximately €6,000 after this grant is applied.
The investment is estimated to pay for itself through energy savings within approximately 10 years, with the panels expected to remain productive for roughly 25 years. Deane estimated that a standard system can reduce household electricity bills by about €300 to €400 annually. Additionally, homeowners can generate extra income by exporting surplus electricity back to the national grid.
The published guidance advises consumers to obtain three separate quotes, consult with neighbours who have already installed solar panels, and use a reputable installer.
