Seanad Hears Calls for Multi-Agency Action on Kildare Blueway Safety and Killarney National Park Wildfires

Friday 17 July 2026

Members of the Seanad have raised urgent concerns regarding safety issues along the Kildare blueway and a recent wildfire at Killarney National Park.

During an Order of Business debate in the Seanad, members highlighted critical infrastructure, safety, and environmental protection issues affecting public amenities in Kildare and Kerry.

Blueway Safety Concerns in Kildare

Senator Fiona O'Loughlin raised an urgent public safety issue affecting residents near the blueway in County Kildare, particularly in the Ballyteague area. The Senator reported the illegal use of scramblers and quad bikes on public roads along the blueway, stating that the situation has escalated from antisocial behaviour to a severe threat to public safety.

According to Senator O'Loughlin, these activities have resulted in serious injuries to local residents, including incidents requiring hospitalisation, surgery, and stitches. To address these safety risks on the recreational corridor, the Senator called for an immediate multi-agency response. This proposed collaboration would involve:

  • An Garda Síochána
  • Waterways Ireland
  • Kildare County Council
  • The relevant Government Department

Wildfire Damage in Killarney National Park

Senator Mike Kennelly expressed deep concern over a recent wildfire that affected Killarney National Park. Initial reports suggest human activity, specifically the reckless use of disposable barbecues during dry and warm weather, may have contributed to the fire.

Early assessments indicate that approximately 25 hectares of valuable peatland, bogland, and native woodland have been damaged. Senator Kennelly praised the rapid response of the emergency services, including the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), local firefighters, and aviation helicopter crews, whose actions prevented a repeat of the April 2021 wildfire that destroyed nearly 2,000 hectares of the national park.
