Short lets and holiday homes threatening Gaeltacht communities, Trinity researchers warn

Tuesday 20 October 2026

Researchers from Trinity College Dublin have warned that holiday homes and short-term lets are displacing residents and threatening the future of Gaeltacht communities.

Short-term lets and holiday homes are forcing local residents out of Gaeltacht areas, according to researchers from Trinity College Dublin.

Reporting by the Irish Independent highlights warnings from the researchers that current housing market pressures risk eliminating Irish-speaking communities over the next 50 years.

According to the Trinity College Dublin researchers, the prevalence of holiday accommodation and short lets has left local residents unable to find housing, compelling them to relocate elsewhere. The findings point to the displacement of local populations as a central factor threatening the long-term survival of Gaeltacht communities.
