Waterford Council suspends Portlaw estate boil water notice

A precautionary boil water notice for 74 homes in Portlaw has been deferred until 21 August following a water fee dispute.
Waterford City and County Council has suspended a precautionary boil water notice for a Portlaw housing estate until 21 August.
The decision affects 74 households in the Woodlands Estate, which are serviced by a private well. A precautionary boil water notice was initiated after the estate's water maintenance firm, Campion, announced it would withdraw its services.
The withdrawal followed a dispute over a proposed 70 per cent increase to the annual €250 maintenance fee. After residents opposed the fee hike, the maintenance contractor indicated it would cease monitoring the private supply, raising concerns that a precautionary boil water notice would be required.
Following consultations with the Health Service Executive (HSE) and a review of the contractor's agreement, Waterford City and County Council agreed to suspend the notice. The council stated that the status of the supply will be reviewed on Friday, 21 August.
The local authority noted that the responsibility for managing and maintaining a private water supply, as well as ensuring it remains fit for human consumption, rests with the developer or the group water scheme. Negotiations remain ongoing between the local authority, the management company, and local residents to resolve the service dispute.
