Waterford Estate Faces Water Service Withdrawal After Fee Dispute

A private water management company is withdrawing services from a 74-home estate in County Waterford following a dispute over increased maintenance fees.

Maintenance firm Campion announced it will cease operations at Woodlands Estate in Portlaw on 14 August. The decision follows a breakdown in talks with residents after the company proposed raising annual fees from €250 to €425 per household.

Without ongoing maintenance, the estate's private well water supply will no longer be monitored, which may result in a precautionary boil notice. Campion director Martin Campion stated that rising sector inflation has nearly tripled maintenance costs over five years, with upkeep for the estate costing the company €25,000 annually.

This dispute highlights the broader challenges of private water infrastructure in Irish housing developments. While rural estates often rely on private connections, transitioning these systems to the public network can take years. According to Uisce Éireann, more than 500 private developer-led sites across the country have been flagged for upgrades and eventual integration into the public system.
