Development description
The site is approximately 1.5 acres and is fully concreted and consists of three permanent structures which include the depolluting bay (area where potentially polluting materials are removed), a small garage and a spare parts store (all indicated on figure 1 attached). The depolluting bay is a single story building with steel and concrete frame and galvanised roofing. The garage and spare parts store are small single storey structures with a galvanised frame construction. The remaining structures include three portacabins housing offices and a parts shop and 5 mobile containers housing spare parts. The site currently operates as an authorised treatments facility for the dismantling, recovery and depollution of end of life vehicles (elv's) under its waste permit (registration number wpr 006/2). Westlink operates three collection trucks collecting elv's from the general public in the surrounding south dublin region. The company also hold a contract from dunlaoighre rathdown county council for the removal of elv's from the travelling community. The general public can also deposit cars at the site free of charge. On arrival at the site elv's are examined and inspected to ensure only material that are permitted are accepted on site. Elv's are then stored on paved areas awaiting the depollution process. The depollution process involves a number of below and above vehicle operations in order to remove all materials that could pose a threat to the enviroment on crushing of the car. These materials include all fluids, lean-acid batteries, filters tyres, air conditioning systems, air bags and catalysts. After the depollution process elv's are crushed and baled by a baler machine. The baled cars are sent to appropriately licenced facilities for further processing. All other wastes removed from the elv's are stored on site in appropriate containers and removed offsite by permitted waste contractors for further treatment and disposal.
